Rationale
Rationale: Butterflies
This unit is designed for 2nd grade students about butterflies. The students will be introduced to insects with and without wings. This will lead to comparing and contrasting caterpillars and butterflies. The students will engage in activities learning about the parts, diet and habitat. For example; raising a caterpillar to a butterfly as a class. The students will keep a journal log of the observations throughout the process. This unit will address the standards at the bottom of the page. They will become aware of the similarities and differences of living organisms. The lessons will be incorporating math, reading, and writing. The math lesson included making estimations and counting. The students will use writing for the journal log when observing the cycle of a butterfly. Also, they will develop reading skills by reading books focusing on the topic of insects and butterflies. This is important for students to learn and relate to because animals, and humans all go through a cycle of life, and have habitats needed for survival.

Grade: 2nd
Standard: 3.3 Biological Sciences
A. Know the similarities and differences of living things
• Identify life processes of living things
• Know that some organisms have similar external characteristics and that similarities and differences are related to environmental habitat
• Describe basic needs of plants and animals
